Margaret and her 12-year-old son Shane have been through a lot over the past decade, which is why their best friend Natasha applied to Home Rescue on their behalf. During her final year studying Science in Maynooth - Margaret found out she was pregnant. When the rent was suddenly increased on the home she was sharing with her then-partner, the couple were offered a mobile home in a family member’s back garden. But what was supposed to be a temporary solution stretched into some challenging years - with Shane diagnosed with autism, and Margaret battling her own chronic health issue (ulcerative colitis).
Over the years, Margaret and her son Shane – post mobile living - lived in emergency accommodation before they were finally offered a two-bed 4th floor apartment in Scholarstown. Five years on, the apartment is full of clutter accumulated by Margaret - a self-confessed bargain hunter. Second-hand furniture, books, hobby equipment, gym gear, clothes, archery items, hula hoops - you name it. With barely enough space to move, Margaret knows things need to change, but her chronic health conditions have made that impossible.
This will be a huge design and build challenge for Dee, Pete and the crew, not helped by the fact that Margaret and Shane live four flights of stairs up! Determined to create a functioning layout for Margaret and Shane - the Home Rescue team will need to achieve something special. Dee will need to completely rethink how the limited space of the apartment works, creating clever storage solutions, future proof design – while also persuading Pete to build a kitchen garden on their balcony!
